Finishing a bathroom is not an easy task and requires a specific approach. Materials for this must meet all necessary requirements, such as moisture resistance, heat resistance and the like. In addition, it is important to choose them so that the finishing emphasizes the possible advantages and hides the shortcomings of the room.
The most common material for this is ceramic tiles. Ceramic boar tiles look great in the bathroom interior. Other types of tiles are no less advantageous.
Features and benefits of tiles
Hog-type tiles have several clear advantages that make them different from any other types of finishes.

Bathroom with window. Be careful little pig!
I wanted to write this post when everything is ready, but it seems to me that this will never happen, after the renovation I have no energy left for decor. Now I want to take a break from renovations, accumulate inspiration and money. And so our bathroom is 7 square meters, it is a former kitchen, we have a second floor and there is no living space below us, so everything is legal. I try to decorate the apartment in a traditional English style, with modern motifs, but it turns out like in the song “I made him out of what I had.” It’s almost impossible to find something good in our city; you have to take risks and order blindly on the Internet. When we bought an apartment, my imagination pictured a claw-foot bathtub by the window, with a separate shower. But life and the budget make their own adjustments, I had to give up a separate shower for a separate toilet and storage room, the bathtub by the window is still only a dream, because it’s not possible to shower in it, and my husband demands a shower. And so the bathroom... and a corridor leading into it, from which you can also get into the pantry, which is also a laundry room and a separate toilet (I won’t show it; it’s not quite ready yet).
It's hard to take pictures in front of the window, I apologize for the quality of the photo. I chose the tile right away, it was love at first sight. White hog APE Ceramica, floor Vives collection 1800, all tiles are Spanish. The Devi heated floor is simply a must have for a bathtub of this size. A double washbasin is very convenient, Duravit Stark 3 washbasin, Duravit acrylic bathtub. The screen is custom-made by local craftsmen from ash, coated with a special paint that allows the wood to expand and contract. Doors open, tip-on mechanism, shower column with Hansgrohe thermostat.
Simas Lante sanitaryware, wooden lid with microlift (this is simply fantastic) from the same company, Geberit installation.
The cabinet and cabinet are made to order, as well as the screen under the bathtub, Hansgrohe Talis Classic faucets, Ikea stand and baskets) Well, a little filling
In the basket on the window there are all sorts of things for the bath and shower, the bust also has its own purpose, I hang jewelry on it when I wash. And if you take into account the fact that I store all the chemicals in the pantry, then there is even more storage space than I need.
Accessories are temporary for now, I’m planning these
I have already ordered a cornice for the curtain, it will be there in 3 weeks, I will sew a black and white curtain. Maybe a picture or poster will appear above the toilet and bidet, and there will be a composition of candles on the window, then I’ll make beautiful photos and a new post. So far, thank you all for your attention)
What kind of hog tile is this and why is it called that?
This unusual name for the material is explained by the presence of two holes at the end of the tile. These holes are covered with a blank glaze, and due to this, the finish resembles a boar's snout. This was the reason for the appearance of this name.
Today, a “hog” is a monochromatic tile of an elongated shape, close to the size of a brick.
Due to the fact that the tile has a rectangular shape, it can be used to imitate brickwork. The volume of the tile visually appears larger and more textured due to the slightly beveled end chamfer. There are models without such an edge, and in this case the contrasting grout is responsible for the texture.
Beveled bevels give the ceramic surface a more vibrant and original look
Tips for choosing
The most important parameter when choosing finishing materials is the size of the room. As a rule, most bathrooms cannot boast of not only large, but even medium sizes. If you choose the wrong material, there is a risk of visually making the space even smaller. To avoid this, when choosing tiles, you need to take into account the advice of professionals.
- For small rooms, it is optimal to use small tiles: this will help to visually make the space larger. Large tiles should not be used; it is better to leave them for installation in larger rooms.
- If the tiles are laid vertically, then the room visually becomes taller, the same with horizontal laying - the room will visually appear wider. In small spaces, you can also use the diagonal laying method.
- For small rooms it is better to choose light colors; these can be several matching shades.
- Large prints, photo wallpapers, large patterns - all this is suitable only for spacious bathrooms.
- For a small bathroom, you can not use any patterns at all, or make a few small accents in the form of small patterns.
- Finishing with a mirror surface will visually increase the space. It can become the basis for an entire mirror wall or part of it.
- You should not use dark or bright borders as decoration in a small bathroom; you should also avoid dividing the wall into a light upper part and a dark lower part.
In large rooms it is better to lay tiles in the classic way with offset
In a small bathroom, you can choose a diagonal “hog” installation
Tiles with a glossy surface will visually increase the space of the bathroom

Interior ideas
In addition to the loft style, boar tiles also look organic in other styles. Let's sketch out a few ready-made ideas for using this tile in different design solutions:
- Art Deco – complement light tiles in noble shades with high-quality sanitary ware and vintage accessories. A symmetrical pattern is appropriate.
- Scandinavian - white or light boar tiles in cold tones are adjacent to elegant wallpaper with small floral patterns. Accessories and decorations are reminiscent of hand-made blacksmith or carpentry work. Paint wooden furniture with white paint that preserves its texture.
- Classic - give preference to tiles with a high bevel. Any discreet shades are appropriate. Textiles should be in perfect harmony in color and texture with the tiles. The few decorations should be carefully selected. Glossy tiles in this style will harmonize perfectly with a marble countertop.
- Provence – try a chaotic combination of pastel shades of beige, purple and gray for a kitchen apron. You can combine the tiles with wallpaper with delicate floral motifs. Coarse linen textiles or cotton textiles to match the wallpaper are suitable.
Boar tiles can be used not only in the bathroom and kitchen. It is used to decorate the fireplace area, wall openings or individual wall fragments in an industrial style. It would also be appropriate in a country house - in the design of a barbecue area, a swimming pool or a sauna stove.
Necessary Requirements
Materials for finishing a bathroom must be selected especially carefully, as they must meet certain requirements. Otherwise, there is a risk that the service life will be very short. Let's consider the necessary requirements.
- Moisture resistant. The tiles should not absorb moisture, and there is a lot of moisture in the bathroom space. If the material absorbs moisture, then with high humidity it will very quickly fail, mold and mildew will appear, and the appearance will also change for the worse. Among other things, the tile may simply fall off due to the fact that it becomes heavy. To determine the level of moisture resistance, you need to look at the back of the tile: there should be almost no pores on it.
- Resistant to cleaning. When cleaning a bathroom, aggressive or chemical cleaning agents are almost always used. They will get on both the tile and the seams at the junction. Tiles that are not resistant to such substances will quickly lose their appearance.
- Evenness on all sides. To check this, you can look at a stack of stacked tiles: if the distance differs by even a millimeter, this is a bad indicator. Laying such tiles will be problematic, the seams will be uneven.
- No damage. There should be no chips or cracks, the pattern should be distributed evenly. If the pattern on one tile is different in color or size, it is most likely a defect. It is better not to purchase such material. It is also important to pay attention to the fact that there are no irregularities, and that the color is of high quality and deep.
Tiles produced in modern times can have different textures - smooth, matte, aged or mirrored.

How to lay it?
Before starting actual installation, prepare the base by thoroughly removing old layers of paint or plaster. After this, you need to prime and putty the wall, then let it dry. When all the materials applied to the surface have completely hardened, the process of laying the tiles begins, during which it is recommended to adhere to certain features.
- Tile adhesive should be applied both to the material and to the surface.
- The mixture should be diluted strictly according to the instructions.
- To place the slabs in the corner part, it is recommended to first cut the side part at an angle of 45 degrees.
- In accordance with the resulting design, you can independently choose the width of the seam, which can be 2-5 mm.
- It is better to take epoxy grout, as it contains special substances that prevent dirt from entering and darkening the seams. However, such a mixture has one drawback - it hardens very quickly, so all excess must be removed immediately so that no stains remain on the tiles.
- Finishing materials should be laid extremely carefully, since the overall appearance of the bathroom depends on this.
Sizes of tile blocks
The range of boar tiles is very diverse, including the range of sizes. However, despite the large number of different sizes, the most popular parameters are 7.5 * 15 cm, 10 * 20 cm, matte and semi-matte options. Particularly popular are models that imitate wood, glass, marble or natural stone.
The sizes of ceramic tiles are selected taking into account the dimensions of the bathroom - small bricks are better suited for a small room, and in a spacious bathroom you can put a standard or large “hog”
