The nuances of choosing and using glue for mirrors, products from the best brands

A mirror is a fragile product that requires some care. This item is an integral part of every home and apartment. Situations often arise when it is necessary to fix glass on a smooth surface. There are a number of nuances here that a person should be aware of. It is also worth choosing the right substance that will give a reliable connection. Therefore, the editors of the YaNashla website have prepared for you a rating of the best glue for mirrors for 2020.

Requirements for glue for mirrors

When choosing a suitable product, even a high-quality one from a well-known brand, you should make sure that the composition is intended not just for glass, but specifically for mirrors. The fact is that some of them may contain components that destroy the amalgam (reflective layer), which over time will lead to the appearance of stains on the mirror surface. Also, the fastening composition should not contain acids or alkalis.

You should not use universal glue for mirrors, as it can also ruin the amalgam. This is due to the fact that manufacturers, in an effort to reduce cost, add chemicals to it that harm reflective surfaces.

When choosing, the material of manufacture and the specifics of the room in which the mirror will be located are no less important. Since the dimensions of the glass change with temperature changes, an adhesive should be used for bathtubs and showers that not only withstands high humidity, but is also not afraid of cold and heat. If it is not flexible enough, a hard substrate will form on the surface after drying, which may result in the glass cracking. Accordingly, the mirror will hold securely only if the adhesive composition has good elasticity and adhesion.

Adhesive types fall into two categories: neoprene and acrylic, each with its own properties. Neoprene contains rubber, so it has a strong odor but good adhesion. Acrylic is environmentally friendly, but cannot be used everywhere. Water solubility makes it undesirable to use in rooms with high humidity, such as the bathroom and kitchen.

Requirements for high-quality glue for mirrors:

  1. No toxic substances, alkalis or acids in the composition.
  2. High level of adhesion to various materials.
  3. Light or transparent color.
  4. Fast drying time.
  5. Elasticity.

Using an adhesive with the wrong composition may cause undesirable consequences. At best, these will be dull spots on the surface, at worst, the mirror may simply fall.

The cheapest option is solvent-based glue. Silicone is chemically neutral and provides good adhesion. But their drying time is slightly longer. Therefore, it is easiest to work with a fastening agent that has a hybrid composition. Its high cost is more than compensated by a high-quality connection.

The glue should be intended not just for glass, but specifically for mirrors

The glue must be resistant to changes in temperature and humidity

Which mounting adhesive for mirrors should I choose?

The adhesive properties of the glue must be high so that the product does not come off the wall and does not break. The composition is selected taking into account the following characteristics and requirements:

  • It is undesirable to use glue that releases toxic substances after drying.
  • The applied layer must remain elastic. This will prevent the glass from stressing and cracking.
  • The adhesive material should not destroy the amalgam structure or change color, otherwise dark spots will be visible under the mirror.
  • The composition should fix quickly and spread evenly onto the treated area.

Foggy mirror

The glue must be resistant to changes in temperature and humidity.

To choose what to glue the mirror on, you need to take into account the type of surface. Adhesive compositions have different adhesion to different materials. The same product may effectively fix glass to drywall, but will not hold it well to tile or plaster.

Glue Moment

It is best to glue mirrors using Moment-Montazh MP-50. It consists of a synthetic resin with high strength and moisture-resistant properties. The glue adheres well to different coatings, does not damage the amalgam substrate, is elastic and does not peel off.

Liquid nails moment installation
When choosing which glue to glue the mirror with, it is better to give preference to the one placed in the cartridge, which simplifies the process of applying the product.

Initial setting time is 24 hours, complete drying time is 7 days. The composition must be applied to clean surfaces. Porous unpainted coatings must first be primed with acrylic sealant.

Tytan mirror glue

A reliable installation tool is Titan adhesive, made from rubber and resins. Its advantages:

  • high fixation strength;
  • adhesion to any materials;
  • elasticity and water resistance of seams.

Assembly adhesive Titan

Since Titan dries instantly, you can adjust the position of the mirror within five minutes. Titanium does not destroy the amalgam and quickly sets to the base. To install decorative accessories, you need to prepare the surface, apply the composition with a gun in vertical stripes, keeping a distance of 5 cm between them, and 2 cm from the edge.

Double-sided tape

Adhesive tape can be used as a main and auxiliary means. Double-sided tape is resistant to ultraviolet radiation, temperature changes, and high humidity. It provides durable, reliable fixation of accessories immediately after gluing. The maximum level of adhesion is achieved after 24 hours. The tape absorbs vibrations and reduces stress in the glass.

To glue a mirror to tape, you need to:

  • Place the product on a flat horizontal surface.
  • Clean the base from dirt and degrease the back side.
  • Mark the attachment points, cut the tape into 10-15 cm pieces and glue them in pairs with vertical strips in a checkerboard pattern.
  • Remove the protective film from the tape, place the accessory against the base and press.
  • Leave the product in a horizontal position for several hours.

It is better to apply tape in vertical stripes

It is convenient to use double-sided tape when installing mirrors to furniture doors and facades. It can be used for auxiliary fastening - the tape will hold the glass until the glue applied with a gun between the pieces of tape is completely dry.

Tile adhesive

An effective way to glue mirrors in the bathroom is by fixing them with tile adhesive. Installation is carried out not on the cladding, but on the base, so the thickness of the glass should be the same as the ceramic finishing fragments.

Tile adhesive Litokol and Lugato

Good tile adhesives: Multifix, PENOSIL Premium MirrorFix.

How to glue a mirror with tile adhesive:

  1. Select a mounting location, level the base, putty and prime.
  2. Install the bottom curb to support the glass.
  3. Nail a wooden plank to the top of the empty section of the wall and secure another border.
  4. Lay the side tiles, immediately removing excess adhesive.
  5. Leave small gaps between the glass and ceramics.
  6. Apply a thick layer of tile adhesive to the wall using a notched trowel.
  7. Carefully place the mirror against the wall, insert plastic crosses at the joints and press the accessory to the base.
  8. Hold the mirror in this position for about 15 minutes.

After drying, you can take out the crosses and rub the seams. But if the mirror is very heavy, the tile adhesive will not support it.

Is it possible to glue on liquid nails?

A special construction adhesive, called “liquid nails,” is used to install decorative elements. Acrylic compounds are suitable for connecting light porous materials, and fastening heavy fragments to smooth bases is done with neoprene liquid nails. To glue a mirror to wood, plastic, metal, tile, you need:

  1. Degrease the surface with soda solution and apply markings.
  2. When gluing to tiles, build a support and additionally use double-sided tape.
  3. Apply liquid nails in a broken line around the perimeter of the glass and squeeze out the glue in large “dots” along the rest of the mirror.

glue for plasticLiquid nails can be used to fasten mirrors.
After this, press the accessory against the wall, wait 10 minutes, tear it off and repeat the procedure. The support under the mirror can be removed the next day.

Other means

The market offers an extensive range of adhesive products that are suitable for installing mirrors. The most popular and reliable means:

  • Soudal 47-A;
  • Penosil MirrorFix;
  • Macroflex MF 930;
  • Bostik Quelyd Mastifix.

Products from the KRASS, Poli-R, Abro, Ottoseal, and Schenk brands are in demand. They differ in component composition, curing speed, and adhesive properties.

Popular adhesives

The main criterion when choosing glue is the presence of high adhesion. Many well-proven compounds are suitable for it, for example, silicone sealant. Non-standard solutions are also possible; as an option, you can glue the mirror to liquid nails. A composition intended for aquariums is also suitable for the bathroom. Among all the variety, Titan and Abro products are especially popular.

Titan

Used to work with different surfaces: concrete, metal, tiles, brick, paint, wood, drywall. Reliability is ensured by the organic resins and synthetic rubber included in the composition. Main advantages:

  • high adhesion;
  • water resistance;
  • elasticity;
  • strength;
  • amalgam preservation;
  • ease of use.

Titan is applied to a surface from which grease has previously been removed. The distance between the glue strips is 5 cm. They retreat 2 cm from each edge. If after gluing the position of the mirror is not satisfactory, it can be corrected within a few minutes.

Abro

Strong adhesive for mirrors with increased adhesion. The basis is epoxy resin. Used for joining various materials with glass. It can be used for gluing the glass itself, which plays an important role when it is necessary to fix a broken piece. When completely dry, it remains transparent. There are no yellowish streaks left. When used in the bathroom, moisture does not spoil the quality of the seams.

It is sold in a set consisting of two ampoules. One of them contains the adhesive itself, and the other an activator. Before starting work with ampoules, cut off the spouts, squeeze their contents into a container and mix thoroughly. Use a syringe to draw up the adhesive and cover the surfaces to be glued with it.

Loctite

Composition of two components: glue and activator. The contents of the package are enough for one or two mirrors, depending on the dimensions. Before application, the parts are mixed and applied to the amalgam in an even layer. Advantages: quick drying, color retention, no smudges. The product is also available in aerosol form, which makes the task easier. High efficiency is combined with economical consumption.

Permatex

It is used mainly for car mirrors, but the properties of the composition allow it to be used in everyday life. It is highly resistant to temperature changes, making it suitable for the bathroom. Available in a tube. It appears to be a clear liquid. The base is cyanoacrylate resin, which provides high adhesion and rapid hardening. The composition does not contain solvents. The advantage is that the glue consists of one component, so there is no need to mix it, which saves time.

DoneDeal

Silicone based sealant. Has a wide range of applications. Often used for gluing mirror tiles and other decorative elements. When applied to the surface it forms a uniform coating. It is heat resistant. Elasticity and strength guarantee high reliability. Advantages: good adhesive properties, transparent color, moisture resistance, long service life, ease of use, low price. Among the disadvantages is that it cannot withstand heavy loads, so it is not suitable for massive mirrors.

How to stick to a wooden or metal surface

Before gluing the mirror to the metal, protect the surface; if there are traces of rust, they are eliminated, and greasy stains are definitely removed. It is common to glue mirrors to wooden furniture; if the chosen location is a cabinet door, it should be removed. The principle of working with metal and wood is largely similar. Includes the following steps:

  1. The door should be positioned flat.
  2. Make markings and, for simplicity, outline the mirror object itself.
  3. Degrease both parts.
  4. Apply glue to the surface of the mirror, you can use a glue gun.
  5. It is applied to the door carefully in order to accurately get to the designated place.
  6. Check the location with the markings, if necessary, move it to the right place.
  7. The weight should be folded on top to make a tight press.

After the required time has passed for complete setting, the door can be returned to the cabinet. For better strength, you can also secure the product with double-sided tape.

The mirror is carefully applied to the door to accurately get to the designated place.

Gluing a mirror to different surfaces is a simple process; you can easily do it yourself. This will help refresh the interior. The use of glue is convenient and practical, because it will not disturb the mirror surface. But we are talking only about special formulations that do not contain substances that are hazardous to them. Therefore, before purchasing, you need to take into account the features of this product, which were described in detail in the article.

What is auxiliary fastener

Before you start attaching a mirror to the wall, especially if it is large, you should think about how to hold it until it dries completely. In this case, various types of auxiliary fasteners will come to the rescue. When gluing small mirrors, you can use lighter types of fasteners rather than the adhesive itself. The most popular types include liquid nails and double-sided tape. Each method has its own scope of application depending on the material.

The advantage of liquid nails over other methods is that they create a strong connection, even if the parts to be glued do not fit tightly together, which is especially important for porous materials. This greatly simplifies the installation of uneven surfaces. The base is synthetic rubber with polymer additives. The big advantage is elasticity.

Before gluing a mirror with liquid nails, you will need to purchase a special gun into which a cartridge loaded with glue is inserted. Outwardly, it resembles a syringe. By pressing, the adhesive composition is applied to the degreased surface in a dotted or serpentine manner. The use of liquid nails for a mirror is advisable when the reflector is to be glued to wallpaper or drywall.

An alternative to this method is double-sided tape. It is a tape with an adhesive applied to both sides. On one side it is protected by a film. It can only withstand light, small-sized canvases. Pieces of tape are evenly distributed over the fat-free back surface. Then the protective film is removed from them and pressed against the material. This way you can glue the mirror to a cabinet or any other furniture. The method is suitable for beginners, since if there are any unevenness, the tape can be easily removed and re-glued.

Sequence of work

Whatever material you are gluing to, its surface should first be prepared. First you need to clean the surface of all types of contaminants and degrease it. If necessary, the surface is leveled with plaster and putty. If we are talking about concrete, then leveling is carried out, putty and primer are applied. Untreated wood requires the application of special products that will reduce the absorption of the adhesive composition. The general principle of work is similar, but individual surfaces have features that should be taken into account when gluing.

If necessary, the surface is leveled with plaster and putty.

How to glue two mirror surfaces

The mirror can be glued together on the sides, or one on top of the other. The first is used to increase the reflective area. The second is when it is not possible to remove the old mirror, but it requires replacing with a new one.

Gluing one on top of the other must be done carefully. First, their surfaces are degreased, then an adhesive solution is applied to both products around the perimeter, and they are pressed against a wall or other selected surface. It is recommended to treat the gaps at the ends using glue and sealant for mirrors.

When there is a need to glue two mirrors together with their edges, identical mirror products are selected. The side parts are pre-cleaned and degreased, and the edges should also be adjusted. You need to glue carefully, making sure that the glue does not come out on the outside.

Either mirrors are glued to the wall one by one, connecting with the edges on it. Or simply along the edges, which will not provide reliable fixation. You can add reliability by using double-sided tape.

Gluing one on top of the other must be done carefully.

Gluing a mirror to ceramics

To glue a mirror onto ceramic and tiles, you need to do the following:

  1. They start by degreasing the wall; you can use soda, alcohol, or solvent.
  2. Glue is applied on the reverse side, with a slight indentation from the edges in a continuous strip.
  3. The rest of the part is covered with glue, drawing a mesh or lattice.
  4. Press the product against the wall.
  5. Support the mirror from below so that it does not fall until drying is complete.

The remaining distance between the mirror and the mosaic is sealed with sealant. Sealing of joints can be done after the curing process is complete. The deadlines are always prescribed by the manufacturer on the packaging.

Correction of the position of the product should be carried out within 5 minutes after pressing against the wall; setting occurs very quickly.

They start by degreasing the wall; you can use soda, alcohol, or solvent.

Bonding technology

The algorithm of actions depends on the type of material on which the mirror can be glued. The surfaces on which the composition will be applied must first be degreased. The use of glue on the back side is possible not only in stripes, but also in dots. When fixing a large mirror, you should prepare supports. When working, it is necessary to observe safety measures: provide access to fresh air, use personal protective equipment, hold the can or tube of glue in such a way as to prevent contact with the eyes. In addition, you should make sure that the product has not expired.

To the furniture

In order to save space, mirrors are often fixed on furniture, it can be wood, plywood, chipboard, MDF. Before gluing the mirror to the wood, all surfaces should be degreased with a solvent. What glue can be used for these purposes is specially designed or colorless construction silicone.

When choosing how to glue mirrors to plywood and similar materials, you should rely on the weight and size of the reflector. For a small, lightweight product, you can use liquid nails, but for a massive one, it is better to take a more reliable composition. What else you should pay attention to is the condition of the surface - if it is not covered with varnish or a laminating compound, it must be sanded with sandpaper and degreased.

If you are going to stick a mirror on a cabinet door, the latter should first be removed from its hinges. Then attach the product to it and outline it around the perimeter. After degreasing, stick double-sided tape on the door in strips of small width at a distance of 10-20 cm, depending on the width. Apply glue between the strips. After the composition has dried, the door can be placed back on the cabinet.

Glue the mirror

To Wall

It’s not difficult to choose wall adhesive for a mirror. The industry produces different types that allow you to attach the reflector to metal or concrete. But what you can use to glue a mirror to walls whose surface is covered with wallpaper is mounting adhesive. However, it is worth considering: if the mirror weighs more than two kilograms, there is a possibility that the wallpaper will not withstand the load and will slide off along with the glue.

The concrete wall should be pre-coated with a primer, removing any unevenness. If you plan to attach a large mirror, first apply glue to the surface of the wall and distribute it evenly with a notched trowel. If it is painted, it does not matter what glue you use to plant the product. The main thing is to degrease the surface well and walk over it with sandpaper.

Before gluing the mirror, it is worth creating the optimal temperature in the room - from 10 to 30 ° C. The lower its value, the longer it will take for the glue to harden.

Such compositions for installation work are sold in tubes. You will not be able to squeeze the product out of the packaging on your own; this can only be done with the help of a special construction gun. Simply insert the tube into the gun and press the trigger: the glue will be squeezed out through the “nose”.

Hand gun
Manual gun for adhesives and sealants in cartridges

The use of a gun for squeezing out liquid nails makes it possible to apply the composition even to the most inaccessible places. At the same time, you will not get dirty, and the seams will turn out very neat. Before using the glue, carefully read the instructions provided by the supplier. It is in the entire manual that it will be written whether the glue is suitable for mirrors, whether it will damage the amalgam, whether the product is afraid of water, and how firmly it adheres to surfaces. By the way, if you intend to work with glue and tape indoors, be sure to pay attention to the paragraph in the instructions indicating the possibility of performing such actions. After all, liquid nails can only be intended for external use, so it is prohibited to use such compositions inside the house.

Chemically neutral silicone adhesive sealant for mirrors and mirror walls

Before purchasing, you should make sure that liquid nails are intended for use on mirrors on walls. Degrease the surface with a soda solution and mark the lower section of the mirror mount. Build a support element for the mirror, apply double-sided tape and apply glue to the surface. Then you should wait for ten minutes, pressing the mirror against the wall. After two days, the support can be removed. To fix the mirror, you can use double-sided tape.

Double-sided construction tape for mirror
Instead of glue, you can use good quality double-sided construction tape

To the tile

Similar to the previous methods, before starting the process, you should clean the surface of the tile from debris. For degreasing, use alcohol, acetone or white spirit. This should be done in several stages, each time waiting for it to dry.

Some problem is the difference in height between adjacent tiles, which can lead to the mirror being skewed and not fitting tightly. To avoid this, you should level the surface by applying a layer of plaster to it. Before gluing the mirror to the wall in the bathroom, it is recommended to apply a sealant.

If the mirror has a large area, it is necessary to install a supporting base.

What to focus on when choosing?

The first thing people pay attention to when buying glue is the presence of an appropriate inscription, which confirms that the product is capable of gluing similar materials. It is better to avoid cheap universal products, since they are often not effective, but the surface deteriorates. To reduce the cost of the product, some manufacturers add various chemical impurities. Before adding an item to your cart, it is important to:

  • Read the ingredients in detail. There should not be any acid or, even worse, alkali, because not all surfaces will withstand such exposure.
  • The label clearly states “For glass”. This is the only way to be sure that the glue will not harm the surface.
  • Contains optimal pH value.
  • Not odorous. If this is detected, the composition contains harmful chemicals that can spoil the appearance or cause an allergic reaction.
  • It is worth asking a consultant about the reliability of adhesion to the surface.
  • The glue should be white, or even better colorless.

Also, we must not forget about the properties and types of adhesive liquids. There are two types: acrylic, which is highly safe and does not emit strong toxic odors, and neoprene - the exact opposite of the first option, but unlike it, it can be used in the bathroom, and it can withstand even high temperatures. However, the smell of neoprene glue is noticeable immediately after opening.

Methods for fixing glass (mirrors)

Not every person knows how to properly glue a mirror so that it stands for ten years. Before performing installation work, it is important to carefully prepare the work surface. Remove dust, moisture, etc. If a person plans to carry out installation on an uneven surface, then preliminary operations are carried out to apply a primer so that the adhesion of the materials is high-quality and reliable. It is also necessary to glue double-sided tape around the periphery of the product. This will be a temporary solution that will allow the glue to set better.

To apply the adhesive liquid, it is better to use auxiliary tools. For example, with a mounting gun. Application method: stripes or dots. Before gluing the material, it is allowed to apply auxiliary drawings on the wall in order to hang the mirror evenly. Application is carried out gradually, you cannot press or press. Only after aligning the lines can you apply a little effort.

Be sure to leave a small gap between the wall and the mirror. As soon as the glue sets, it is covered with silicone. This cunning action will preserve the structure when the building shrinks.

If the installation process involves furniture, then a person will need: a liquid to remove stains from glass, a dry cloth that does not leave lint, glue and tape. Assembly takes place in several stages:

  • When gluing the structure to a cabinet door or interior paneling, it is better to first dismantle the product and place it on the floor.
  • The dimensions of the mirror are measured and the landing sites are marked. For convenience, you can attach a mirror to the canvas.
  • The rag is soaked in a special solution for glass. The installation sites and the back side are thoroughly wiped.
  • The strips of double-sided tape are glued. It is important not to go beyond the markings; you should also maintain a distance of up to 10 cm.
  • The space between the resulting strips is filled with adhesive liquid.
  • Protective films are removed.
  • The mirror is fixed on the surface and pressed lightly.
  • After a certain period of time (indicated on the glue packaging), you need to make sure that the substance has connected the surfaces.

What could go wrong?

Not all jobs can go perfectly, especially if basic requirements and precautions are not followed.

  • If the glue is frozen, it is better to wait until it warms up to room temperature on its own. Heating using a burner is prohibited.
  • If a person smokes, it is better to take a break than to wait for the composition to ignite due to accidental evaporation.
  • All windows in the room must be opened so that harmful fumes do not accumulate inside the room.
  • It is best to buy protective equipment that is sold at any hardware store.
  • In case of contact with glue, wiping your eyes and skin is prohibited.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.

How to glue two mirrors

The need to glue two surfaces together arises when an old mirror that has lost its appearance cannot be removed. To complete the task as efficiently as possible, you need to apply a suitable composition around the perimeter of both parts and press them against each other. After complete drying, treat the end gaps with sealant.

Before gluing mirrors with edges, you should take into account that connecting the side edges requires maximum precision and accuracy. The end side of an already hanging product must first be cleaned of dirt and dust. You should not remove the mirror, since during subsequent installation the small bonding area may not be able to withstand it and may burst.

To seal a fragile mirror surface, it is important to take into account the weight and dimensions of the product, the material to which it will be attached, and the temperature in the room. Bonding will be reliable only if you choose a high-quality composition and act strictly according to the instructions.

Walls

How to glue a mirror to the wall? An important factor is the adhesive composition. If you need to mount a relatively small reflective sheet, you should pay attention to Tytan brand adhesive. This is a specialized product made on the basis of resins and rubber. The composition ensures reliable adhesion to the building surface. Tytan glue makes sense to use on brick, concrete, plasterboard and wood surfaces.

Tytan glue

The main advantages of the mounting tool of this brand include the following:

  • the glue is quite easy to use; you need to attach the mirror to the wall within 10-20 minutes, while the sticky composition has not yet hardened;
  • the components of the product do not damage the surface of the mirror;
  • the glue is not afraid of moisture, and the seams are waterproof and elastic.

Advice! Tytan adhesive is suitable for working with small reflective surfaces. In order to securely install a large mirror, it is recommended to use fasteners that will prevent it from falling.

For large mirrors, for example, full-length canvases, the specialized QUELYD Mastifix adhesive is much more suitable. This glue for mirrors, just like with the previous brand, is ideal for working on concrete, brick and stone surfaces. The product can also be used with ceramics, plastic, and metal. The adhesive includes synthetic rubber and solvent.

QUELYD Mastifix

The main advantages of “QUELYD Mastifix for mirrors”:

  1. Possibility of use in wet areas. The product does not lose its properties even at temperatures from -20 to +90 degrees.
